Preferred Journal Format Policy
As has been confirmed in recent local journal use studies, the UCSD library users clearly prefer use of the online versions of journals to that of the print, when online is equal to or better than the print version. The acquisition of both formats increases our costs to the collections budget and commits shelving space and ongoing staff resources to the handling, binding, and shelving of journal issues. Effective Jan. 2008, UCSD will prefer the online version of journal titles and cancel print subscriptions when adequate safeguards to permanent access have been met. These safeguards include: a shared print repository for the journal available for delivery within the UC system and a trusted third party digital repository for the electronic journal. We will maintain current print subscriptions for those titles selected for the current journal collections that enhance library study and research spaces and for those titles with delayed or embargoed or no online access.
