S&E weeding projects for 2009
- Annex 2nd floor: Identify old books and journals sent to annex in 1990's that can be discarded or sent to SRLF. Mark shelves of books and journals that can be weeded (leaving the government technical reports).
Notify Ryan that they are ready for weeding.
Status - 40 shelves identified April 2009 (DK). Wd or transf'd serials to SRLF May 09; monos checked against SRLF holdings (Ryan F & Dennis Aldridge). COMPLETED Q4 2009 - x volumes from annex discarded.
- Reference:
Move out items from Core Chem table to regular reference. Status COMPLETED -April/May 2009 (TV).
- S&E Journal stacks:
Each bibliographer to review his/her call number areas in journals stacks for serials no longer being used. Approach is to walk the stacks and look for old titles no longer of interest for research or out of date. Also look for print that duplicates additional e-archives purchased in 2008 or 2009 as possible candidates for moving out.
Make decisions to Withdraw or SRLF or Annex (or offer to other UCSD library as fill-ins & withdraw).
Start date: June 2009 Lists to DK Due Date: before Sept 8 2009
Status: DS complete July 23. TV SRLF/Discards list Sept 1; working on Annex. MLB - still working
Cataloging fixes - DS send Aug, TV sending Sept.
- NASA fiche - DDS-ILL staff and circ students project - start summer 09; expected end Oct 09.
- Diskettes - monographs: Remove diskettes from ec (S&E Circ location) that haven't been circulated for 3 years. May require some editing of bibliographic record to remove notes that diskette accompanied book, in addition to deleting diskette item records. (JN)
Future projects:
- Annex 2nd floor Oversize: Identify oversize atlases and books (mostly astronomy) that can be moved to SRLF or discarded. Possible discussion with UCSD CASS Marlar library if they want these materials (MLB).
- S&E book stacks: Weed really old books no longer found in Innopac, but still downstairs (records never in catalog or ). Process: visual identification (old labels say SSE or just look like old paper glued to spine). Bibliographers will move through collection working back from the Z's to the A's. Pull items for discard/SRLF onto carts and send to metadata (DK, DS, TV, MLB, expected date: summer 2009).
Other ideas for weeding (may wait until 2010):
- CD's accompanying serials: Remove CD's from location ec that duplicate archives of e-journals. E-journal archive must have perpetual access in CDL license, focus is on regular (known) scientific societies and commercial publishers.
- Journal stacks: look for additional e-archives purchased in 2008 or 2009 as possible candidates for moving out.
- Reference Indexes: INIS Atomindex to Annex. ASTA to Annex. STAR to come back.
- Reference:
Weed older handbooks & out-of-date dictionaries - ALL.
Move McGraw Hill handbooks to stacks if Access Engineering purchased.
- Annex 1st floor - review titles being paged and bring back higher use monos to S&E (see S&E 2008 notes).
