SSHL Tower Maintenance Plan

For the floors that have been weeded to reach the target 75% level, we will implement annual maintenance procedures to remain at this steady-state capacity.

The number of new volumes added each year within each broad call number range must equal the number of volumes removed from the same range.

In early July, the SSHL Collections Assistant, in coordination with MSD Database Management, will provide each collection manager the volume count of titles added to the collection in their areas of responsibility over the course of the previous fiscal year.

The number of volumes added annually within each broad call number range must equal the number of volumes removed from the same range.  For example, during fiscal year 2007-2008, 545 volumes were added to the classifications B through BD.  The responsible collection manager will identify 545 volumes to remove from anywhere within this broad range.

Possible approaches to the process:

·        The collection manager may continue to remove seldom used titles, based on lists generated by specific criteria for the call number areas.

·        Collection managers may physically remove volumes from the shelves and place on a book truck.   The truck should be delivered to the SSHL Collections Assistant.

·        Collection managers may coordinate with the SSHL Collections Assistant in implementing other procedures, as appropriate.

Whichever procedure is followed, the SSHL Collections Assistant will work with the collection managers, verify the volume counts, and deliver the volumes to MSD Database Management for transfer to SRLF or withdrawal.

This process should be completed by the end of summer and before the beginning of the busy fall quarter.
