Web Archiving Service Invitation and Guidelines

Page history last edited by Roger Smith 11 mos ago

The Web Archiving Service [WAS] from the CDL is now available. WAS is available for you to select web sites to capture, capture those sites, manage them, view them, and preserve them.  This is a revolutionary service that will allow you to preserve collections of web-published materials – materials that have, until now, been out of reach for systematic collection building activities.

A complete WAS User Guide is available at: http://www.cdlib.org/inside/projects/preservation/webatrisk/documents/was_user_guide.pdf

Here are more CDL information pages related to WAS

·         CDL’s Web Archiving Program http://www.cdlib.org/inside/projects/preservation/webatrisk/cdl_webarchiving_program.html General information about CDL’s Web Archiving activities.

·         CDL’s Web-at-Risk Grant < http://www.cdlib.org/inside/projects/preservation/webatrisk/  Detailed information about CDL’s NDIIPP funded project.

·         CDL’s Web Archiving Service Information site http://www.cdlib.org/inside/projects/preservation/webatrisk/web_archiving.html  Public information about WAS.

·         The Web Archiving Service < http://was.cdlib.org   The WAS service – account required. Please submit proposals for a UC San Diego Web Archiving project to Roger Smith outlining the Collection  Scope and Statement as described in the WAS Collection Plan Guidelines, http://www.cdlib.org/inside/projects/preservation/webatrisk/documents/WebArchivingServiceCollection_Plan_Guidelines.pdf.  Those of you proposing projects should consider the scope of the work [what it is you are intending to accomplish], as well as how the material you are collecting is appropriate for the UC San Diego Campus to archive. The approval process will take into consideration potential duplication of effort with others. We will seek to build connections between people working on similar projects.

Proposals will be reviewed and approved by the Collection Coordinators Group.

Roger Smith will be the campus administrator for UC San Diego projects and will coordinate the establishment of projects in the system and the assignment of project administrator and submitter roles. In addition the campus administrator will coordinate overall campus use and communicate concerns to/from CDL. Steve Coy and Annelise Sklar have been using the WAS software in both development and production versions. They are also available to assist with questions and share their experience. We look forward to hearing from you and working together on your web content capture projects.

Thank you,
